TORRINGTON — The Northwest CT Community Foundation has awarded grants to 24 area nonprofit organizations, totaling $106,850 during its first grant cycle of 2021. The Community Foundation awards discretionary grants to Northwest Connecticut charities three times a year: early spring, late June and late fall. Additionally, Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation contributed $20,250 towards several grants from the Northwest Corner Fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.
Noteworthy among the recent awards include:
$2,500 to Gifts of Love to support the Weekend Backpack Program for food insecure families from Torrington’s elementary schools
$10,000 to Greenwoods Counseling Referrals to support one month of on-boarding expenses to expand counseling services in response to unmet demand precipitated by COVID-19
$2,500 to Litchfield Performing Arts to support scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need attending Litchfield Jazz Camp
First Cycle Grants:
Bakerville Community Nursery School – $6,300 to support general operating expenses (from the Margaret C. Tupper Fund and the Robert V. Carr Fund)
Community Kitchen of Torrington – $5,000 to support general operating expenses (from the Lucia Tuttle Fritz Fund)
Friendly Hands Food Bank – $3,500 to support general operating expenses (from the Edwin M. Stone and Edith H. Stone Fund)
Gifts of Love and Community Farm of Simsbury – $2,500 to support the Weekend Backpack Program for food insecure families from Torrington’s elementary schools (from the Lucia Tuttle Fritz Fund)

Hotchkiss Library of Sharon – $20,000 to support renovation and expansion of the library facilities including accessibility updates (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Housatonic Valley Association – $5,000 to support wages for two seasonal bilingual River Information & Outreach interns in 2021 (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund) with an additional $3,150 from the Northwest Corner Fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation
Housatonic Child Care Center – $15,000 to support general operating expenses (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund) with an additional $5,000 from the Northwest Corner Fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation
Housatonic Youth Service Bureau – $4,000 to support the creation of facilitated educational videos to complement telehealth counseling sessions (from the Carlton D. Fyler and Jenny R. Fyler Fund) with an additional $2,100 from the Northwest Corner Fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation
Litchfield Community Center – $800 to support general operating expenses (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund)
Litchfield Department of Social Services – $5,500 to support the cost of a refrigerator, freezer, shelving, and other equipment to establish a food pantry to address increased food insecurity (from the Edwin M. Stone and Edith H. Stone Fund)
Litchfield Performing Arts – $2,500 to support scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need attending Litchfield Jazz Camp (from the Ruth and Robert Cron Endowment Fund)
McCall Center for Behavioral Health – $3,500 to support general operating expenses (from the Lucia Tuttle Fritz Fund ) with an additional $1,500 from the Northwest Corner Fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation
Music Mountain – $5,000 matching grant to support the purchase and installation of a new sound reinforcement, recording, and livestreaming system for Gordon Hall (from the Khurshed Bhumgara Fund) with an additional $3,500 from the Northwest Corner Fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation
New Hartford Volunteer Ambulance – $2,500 to support general operating expenses (from the Keroden Endowed Fund)
Norfolk Foundation – $1,500 to support honoraria for authors/speakers for the 2021 Haystack Book Talks literary festival (from the Keroden Endowed Fund)
The Norfolk Land Trust – $1,300 to support equipment, labor, and cloud storage to digitize all land trust records (from the Keroden Endowed Fund)
Northwest Conservation District – $3,300 to support vegetable container gardening kits and workshops for 20 food insecure families served by Brooker Memorial (from the Robert V. Carr Fund)
Northwest Connecticut Arts Council – $5,000 to support general operating expenses (from the Ruth and Robert Cron Endowment Fund) with an additional $2,000 from the Northwest Corner Fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation
Torrington Historical Society – $2,000 to support a new phone system to link all buildings on campus (from the Lucia Tuttle Fritz Fund)
Torrington Public Schools – $1,500 to support the purchase of books and other materials for the Vogel-Wetmore Media Center to present diverse main characters and to present the issue of COVID in an age- and culturally- appropriate way (from the Carlton D. Fyler and Jenny R. Fyler Fund)
Town of Barkhamsted – $3,150 to support the installation of an automatic door for the senior center (from the Douglas and Janet Roberts Fund)
Winchester Youth Service Bureau – $7,000 to support the Leaders in Training program at Rising Star Camp (from the Carlton D. Fyler and Jenny R. Fyler Fund)
