HVA and Massachusetts Fisheries and Wildlife Riverways Program have developed a program to monitor and record the amount of river flow at various locations in the Massachusetts Housatonic Watershed. Water level gauges were installed at seven sites and trained volunteers, using Massachusetts Riverways criteria to calibrate stream flow, record water flow at regular intervals. This data is then downloaded onto a graph to allow us to continually track flow conditions over time. The findings are also reported to MassRiverways and the USGS.
These data show that at times flow conditions that are regulated from lakes and ponds do not provide adequate flow below the dams to maintain healthy aquatic habitat. The more than 100 dams in the watershed could be affecting flow and HVA's data will help to determine future water policy in the state.
