SOUTHBURY -- The Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition has received a grant from the Housatonic River Project Fund started by FirstLight Hydro Generating Co.

The company, which generates power on the Housatonic River from Massachusetts to Monroe, established the fund to promote the environment, encourage energy efficiency and improve public safety.

The fund helps nonprofits and other community organizations pay for projects that will improve the quality of life within the Housatonic River region. The coalition will use its grant to purchase and install storm drain markers in the watershed.

Other grant recipients include the Housatonic Valley Association, Connecticut State Environmental Conservation Police, Lake Lillinonah Authority, state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Candlewood Lake Authority.

"FirstLight was extremely pleased with the number of applications received in this inaugural grant round," said Len Greene, spokesman for FirstLight. The company has also donated more than 150 trees and bushes for vegetative buffer enhancements along the Housatonic River Project system.

*NOTE: HVA's grant from FirstLight will be used to enhance public support and stakeholder engagement for the development of a Still River Watershed Management Plan. This $10,000 grant provides a critical component to the project to develop a website and social media campaign, educating riverside residents and recreationalists and bringing the planning process into watershed communities.
